First stage abstract
19 January 2005, by PatriciaStormnet abstract as submitted in the first stage proposal submission (form A1) Local short-range numerical weather prediction (NWP) in Europe is based on high-resolution limited-area models and relies on many, usually small, national teams who joined their efforts within four consortia. Since, on one side there is a continuous need for training early-stage researchers on NWP-related issues, and, on the other side expertise is widely spread among teams, a common and cross education (…) -
First stage outline proposal
19 January 2005, by PatriciaThe outline proposal as submitted in the first stage proposal (form B) 1. List of Partners 2. Short description of the STORMNET project STORMNET (Scientific Training for Operations and Research in a Meteorological NETwork) aims at building a European training network for local short-range high-resolution numerical weather prediction and its applications. European meteorological services now have to face the challenge of a quick march towards very high resolution applications for (…) -
First stage research program
19 January 2005, by Patricia1. Relevance of the research objectives The need for better regional and local short-range weather predictions is continuously increasing in our society, not only in the agricultural, industrial and economic fields but also in relation with outdoor leisure activities. Of prime importance is the prediction of risks, for human life and heavy damages. Not only storms must be better forecasted, but also severe weather which may cause disruptions (in water and power distribution, surface and (…) -
First stage training program
19 January 2005, by Patricia1. Needs In Europe, the conditions of recruitment of young researchers in numerical weather prediction (NWP) teams vary significantly from one national (hydro)meteorological service (NMS) to another, and even from person to person. New researchers may come from other departments of the NMS (including associated schools for a few institutes), or be recruited at Universities, not necessarily from a faculty teaching meteorology. Several European NWP experts had an initial training in (…) -

ALADIN and AROME
2005, by Patriciafrom ALADIN (Aire Limitée Adaptation dynamique Développment INternational) to ALADIN-2 (AROME Limited Area Decentralized International Network) via ALARO (transition step between ALADIN and AROME) AROME stands for Applications of Research to Operations at MesoscalE. It is a new weather prediction concept from Météo-France that is being developed with many partners, mostly in Europe. By end of 2008 it will provide highly competitive products for fine-scale weather forecasting, (…) -
