Meteorological data measured on-board commercial aircraft over the FASTEX domain (20N-90N ; 140W-40E)

Data set source:

  • commercial aircraft
Parameters available, time and spacial frequency depend on the system that equipped the aircraft:
  • AIREP data "traditional" transmission
  • ASDAR data (Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay)
  • ACARS data (Aeronautical-radio-incorporated Communication Adressing and Reporting System )
  • MOZAIC data (Measurement of OZone by AIrbus in service airCraft)
  • Information on available data in the FASTEX Central Archive

  • Available since :13 MAR 1997 - Last Updated: 18 SEP 1998
  • Time Coverage (YYYYMMDD): between 19970101 and 19970228
  • Geographic Coverage (decimal degrees):
  • ACARS: latitude between 20 and 63, longitude between -140 and -65
  • AIREP: latitude between 20 and 90, longitude between -140 and 40
  • AMDAR: latitude between 20 and 80, longitude between -140 and 40
  • MOZAIC: latitude between 20 and 72, longitude between -123 and 40
  • Number of observations:
  • ACARS: 335000 (about 5700 messages a day)
  • AIREP: 108800 (about 1800 messages a day)
  • AMDAR: 204500 (about 3500 messages a day)
  • MOZAIC: 122500 (about 2000 messages a day)

  • Data Processing

  • Detailed information on MOZAIC data processing

  • Quality Control Processing

  • MOZAIC data:
    controlled by the data provider
  • ACARS, AIREP, AMDAR: real time quality control processing
as recommended by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), was applied on operational data received at Météo-France (in Toulouse, France) from the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) and provides quality control flags on several parameters. Real time quality control procedures are explained in the
quality control procedures handbook (last update: 13 Mar,1997).

  • Data format

  • ACARS, AIREP and AMDAR:
