	<title>SURFEX</title>

	<description> SURFEX (Surface Externalis&#233;e, in French) is a surface modelling platform developed by M&#233;t&#233;o-France in cooperation with the scientific community.
SURFEX is composed of various physical models for natural land surface, urbanized areas, lakes and oceans. It also simulates chemistry and aerosols surface processes and can be used for assimilation of surface and near surface variables.
SURFEX has its own initialisation procedures and can be used in stand alone mode and coupled to an atmospheric model.
In SURFEX, each model grid box is represented by four surface types : sea or ocean, water bodies (lakes, ...), urban areas and nature (soil and vegetation). Each surface type is modeled with a specific surface model and the total flux of the grid box results from the addition of the individual fluxes weighted by their respective fraction. The problem comes from the possibility to use both &lt;strong&gt;ECOCLIMAP &lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;prescribed physiographic parameters&lt;/strong&gt; added in Surfex v7: prescribed parameters are now written by vegtype and for every decade, whereas before there were written by patch and for NTIME time dates. &lt;p&gt;Several developments were required for M&#195;&#169;so-NH 4.9:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034; role=&#034;list&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; If LTREEDRAG = T in NAM_TREEDRAG, the tree drag is taken into account in the atmospheric model instead of Surfex. This induces the creation of several new routines notably to split the grid and sum on all processors. It also has an impact on the interpolation routines.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; update of the writing in the .des file&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some tests were also done in AROME configuration, and lead to some corrections:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul class=&#034;spip&#034; role=&#034;list&#034;&gt;&lt;li&gt; the missing USE MODI_... were added; the useless USE MODI_... where removed.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; the covers characteristics are read in .bin files and no longer in mode_cover....F90 files. However, it's still possible to read the information without these .bin files activating LREAD_DATA_COVER=T in NAM_READ_DATA_COVER.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; lines in F77 were adapted&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Surfex v7.1 was compiled on IBM and led also to little corrections.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
