Jean-Christophe Calvet received the M.Eng. degree in agronomy from AgroParisTech, France, in 1990, the M.Sc./Eng. degree in meteorology from the Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie, Toulouse, France, in 1990, the Ph.D. degree from the University of Toulouse in 1996, and the Habilitation in 2002. He joined Météo-France, Toulouse, the French meteorological service, in 1990 and the Centre National de la Recherches Météorologiques in 1994, where he has been the Head of a land modeling and remote sensing section since 2003. His research interests include land–atmosphere exchange modeling and the use of remote sensing over land surfaces for meteorology. His most recent works concern the joint analysis of soil moisture and vegetation biomass, and the representation of carbon cycle in climate models.

Terrestrial carbon cycle modelling: development of the ISBA-A-gs and ISBA-CC models, used in the SURFEX modelling platform of Météo-France, and designed in collaboration with (national level) INRAE and LSCE and (international level) ECMWF.

Impact of climate change on vegetation at the mesoscale.

Space hydrology: contribution to the development of land microwave radiometry remote sensing, with inputs to the SMOS space mission (in collaboration with INRAE, CESBIO, LATMOS) launched in November 2009, and contribution to the progress in the use of the ASCAT soil moisture products (in collaboration with the University of Vienna, CNES, EUMETSAT), now assimilated by a number of meteorological services in Europe. Implementation of a soil moisture network in southern France (SMOSMANIA).

Assimilation of satellite data in land surface models, in order to improve drought and carbon flux monitoring, improve the numerical weather prediction models, and built land surface reanalyses.

Quality assessment of satellite-derived terrestrial climate variables.
