Second HIGH-TUNE ‘Coding Sprint’ from 2 to 4 May 2018 at LMD
22 May 2018, by Fleur CouvreuxAfter the success of the first coding spring organised from 5 to 7 September 2017 within HIGH-TUNE, a second coding sprint was organised from 2 to 4 May 2018 at LMD (Paris).
The first half day consisted of presentations on :
– the tuning tool developped for the tuning of free parameters based on the comparison of single-column models and Large-eddy simulations. This code used the statistical tools developped at the University of Exeter is a tool shared between LMD and the CNRM that can be applied either on LMDZ or any models of Meteo-France (AROME, ARPEGE and ARPEGE-Climat).
– the new developments realised at the University of Exeter by Daniel Williamson and its team in particular the use of more complex metrics (vertical profiles, time series) as well as the account for non-linearity in the response of the model to free parameters.
Afterwards, a coding sprint allows us to update the tools with the inclusion of multi-metrics as well as more complex metrics such as vertical profiles. This coding sprint also permits us to start to interpret the results obtained from these tools. -
First workshop ‘Coding Sprint’ September 5 to 7 2017 HIGH-TUNE and DEPHY-2 in LMD
18 May 2018, by florence favotA first meeting of various presentations around the tuning of models has been organised from 5 to 7 September 2017 within HIGH-TUNE at LMD (Paris).
The first day consists of presentations around the importance of tuning for climate models, the presentation of statistical tools that can be used for this tuning, the previous work on the comparison between single-column models and large-eddy simulations.
Afterwards, a coding sprint was organised in order to better understand the statistical tools developped by Daniel Williamson at the University of Exeter and start to apply them to the comparison of Single-Column models and Large-Eddy Simulations. For that, two case studies, one for the clear boundary layer and one for a fair-weather cumulus day. -

Project organisation
15 December 2016, by florence favotProject organisation
The project is structured into 4 tasks that all involve at least two partners.
Task 1 is dedicated to the project coordination, dissemination of the results and valorization.
Task 2 focuses on the development and application of an automatic tuning strategy at the process level. It aims at objectively determining the values of the different free parameters that arise in the different parameterizations involved in the representation of boundary-layer clouds. This (…) -
Partners
15 December 2016, by florence favotThe consortium :
To reach the objectives of the project, the consortium gathers applied mathematicians, radiative transfer experts, climate and atmosphere modeling experts, which guarantees a real and significant outcome of the project in state-of-the-art global weather forecast and climate models. The collaborations among the different partners are already active. Two of the three partners (IPSL/LMD and CNRM) have been working together for more than a decade now. This fruitful and ongoing (…)
