The goal is to produce an atmospheric state as close as possible to the reality and at the same time dynamically consistent, taking into account all the available information: observed data, model, physical constraints, climatology
(NOWCASTING) ANALYSIS: the only aspect to consider is to be as near as possible to the observations
- Dynamical balance is not required
- No subsequent forecast
DATA ASSIMILATION: Initial fields needed for forecasting
- Close to the observations and at the same time dynamically consistent
- Initial fields for NWP models
