AROME-ALADIN special workshop
April 11-12, 2003, Prague
6 - Various issues linked to the AROME-ALADIN convergence
It
is rather difficult to structure a linear preparatory text for such
an issue. Indeed the problem is so multiform and its various aspects
so entangled that any ordering of priorities is already a subjective
distortion of the overal truth. Let us therefore simply outline that
the complete presentation will try and deal with the following
topics:
How
to preserve the succesfull spirit of the ALADIN cooperation within
ambitions and calendars radically different from the usual ones?
How
to get back to a less constrained view of scientific innovation?
How
to forget the ARPEGE downscaling reflex and think, on the contrary,
in upscaling terms, for goals prior to the nominal AROME’s
ultimate use everywhere?
What
are concretely the new challenges and how to redistribute priorities
for facing them, including in terms of more deported maintenance
efforts (for a temporary transition period)?
Which
’new generation’ of specialists do we need for such
unusual (in ALADIN’s world) perspectives?
What
is the in-depth difference between the launching of ALADIN in 1990
and what will be at stake more than 12 years later?
Which
scope exists for a truly mutually beneficial approach of the
AROME-ALADIN convergence and how to offer guarantees on each side
for its realisation?
It
is hoped that even a rapid scan of all these issues will offer the
needed incitation for an open, mind-stimulating and fruitful second
part of the workshop.
