 Description

MOCAGE (Modèle de Chimie Atmosphérique de Grande Echelle) est le modèle de Chimie-Transport de Météo-France. Il s’attache à décrire l’évolution de la composition de l’atmosphère, à la fois pour les constituants gazeux et les aérosols, offrant une large gamme d’applications possibles, depuis la prévision de la qualité de l’air quotidienne jusqu’aux études d’impact du changement climatique, en passant par le suivi de nuages de cendres volcaniques.

La configuration de MOCAGE est en effet flexible : il peut être appliqué à l’échelle uniquement globale ou sur des domaines plus restreints à haute résolution. De plus, il est possible d’imbriquer plusieurs domaines successifs de résolution plus fine. Ainsi, une configuration couramment utilisée est constituée d’un domaine global à 1 degré de résolution et d’un domaine régional européen à 0.1 degré. Sur la verticale, une coordonnée hybride permet d’épouser le relief près du sol puis de tendre vers des niveaux isobares. Deux configurations pour les niveaux verticaux sont proposées : une configuration à 47 niveaux allant jusqu’à 5 hPa qui se répartissent en 7 niveaux dans la couche limite atmosphérique, 20 dans la troposphère et 20 dans la basse/moyenne stratosphère ou une configuration à 60 niveaux, version 47 niveaux étendue vers le haut jusqu’à 0.01hPa.

MOCAGE est un modèle de Chimie-Transport. Cela signifie que les variables météorologiques (comme la pression, le vent, la température..) n’y sont pas calculées mais extraites d’un autre modèle, météorologique celui-là, tels ARPEGE, AROME, IFS, pour les prévisions de qualité de l’air ou ARPEGE-Climat pour les simulations climatiques. Les émissions sont également des données d’entrée du modèle. La plupart sont basées sur des inventaires réalisés par d’autres organismes, à différentes échelles spatio-temporelles. Les émissions de certaines espèces sont toutefois décrites de manière dynamique, par exemple il est nécessaire que la quantité de poussières désertiques injectée dans l’atmosphère soit directement reliée au vent.

Muni de ces données d’entrée (météorologie et émissions), le modèle va décrire, pour chacune des espèces, le transport vertical et horizontal à différentes échelles, les transformations physiques, comme le lessivage ou la sédimentation des aérosols ou le dépôt à la surface, ainsi que les transformations chimiques.

Pour la chimie gazeuse, le schéma chimique complet utilisé est baptisé RACMOBUS, constitué du regroupement des schémas troposphérique RACM (Stockwell, 1997) et stratosphérique REPROBUS (Lefèvre, 1994), et complété par le schéma du soufre. Il contient 112 espèces et 379 réactions, permettant ainsi de décrire aussi bien la pollution urbaine de basse couche que l’évolution de la couche d’ozone.

Les aérosols sont décrits selon une représentation en taille, sur 6 classes de taille chacun. Les aérosols primaires décrits sont les poussières désertiques, les sels marins, le carbone-suie, le carbone organique et diverses espèces de pollens. Les aérosols secondaires inorganiques (sulfate, nitrate et ammonium) et organiques issus de précurseurs gazeux sont aussi représentés.

Il existe également une version sans chimie de MOCAGE, baptisée MOCAGE-Accident, qui décrit en quelques minutes l’évolution sur le globe d’un rejet ponctuel de composé dans l’atmosphère. Cette version peut également être utilisée en mode inverse pour déterminer l’origine d’un polluant.

Les versions complète et accidentelle de MOCAGE sont pleinement opérationnelles à Météo-France. Ainsi, MOCAGE-Accident a été abondamment utilisé lors de l’éruption de l’Eyjafjallajokull en 2010, et de l’accident de Fukushima en 2011. MOCAGE est utilisé quotidiennement depuis 2005 pour alimenter Prev’Air, la plate-forme française de prévision de la qualité de l’air (http://www2.prevair.org/) qui propose des prévisions quotidiennes des concentrations de différents polluants. Il participe également à la prévision opérationnelle d’ensemble des modèles de qualité de l’air sur l’Europe dans le cadre du programme Copernicus (http://www.regional.atmosphere.copernicus.eu/)

Les applications dans le domaine de la recherche sont bien sûr très nombreuses. Dans le domaine de la qualité de l’air, MOCAGE a été utilisé de longue date : depuis la campagne ESCOMPTE en 2001 sur le sud de la France jusque, plus récemment, pour les campagnes du programme CHARMEX sur le bassin méditerranéen. Il a également été partie prenante de nombreux projets de recherche : GEMS, MACC, MACC-II, MACC-III, VolcHalClim, ....

Une autre application est l’étude de l’impact du changement climatique sur la composition chimique de l’atmosphère. A l’échelle globale, MOCAGE est impliqué dans le projet international CCM-I. Sur l’Europe, le projet européen interdisciplinaire IMPACT2C s’est attaché à décrire les différentes facettes d’un monde où la température serait de 2 degrés supérieure à l’ère pré-industrielle. MOCAGE y a participé avec trois autres modèles en décrivant l’évolution de la qualité de l’air.

MOCAGE possède un système d’assimilation de type variationnel (MOCAGE-PALM) développé en étroite collaboration avec le CERFACS qui est utilisé pour assimiler des observations satellitaires de composition de l’air, des observations in situ de qualité de l’air, et pour préparer de futures missions satellitaires via la technique des OSSE.
