Duration 2 ans

 Objectives

The interest of the SWOT mission at the continental/global scale is to observe all major watersheds and lakes, especially those still poorly observed in-situ. This type of study can be carried out via hydrological modeling, by using a model such as the ISBA-CTRIP (Interactions Ground Biosphere Atmosphere-CNRM Total Runoff Integrating Pathways) which is part of the SURFEX platform (Externalized Surface) developed at CNRM. The project is oriented towards two parallel themes (modeling lakes and rivers on a large scale) and their eventual merging with the objective of obtaining a better understanding and modeling of the complete global hydrological cycle using SWOT. This work contributes to pre-launch SWOT studies.

 Contributions by CNRM

CNRM brings in expertise in terms of hydrological and hydrodynamic processes and modeling (using the SURFEX platform and ISBA-CTRIP).

 Deliverables and Results

- implementation of a new lake-mass model and the simulation of the mass balance of lakes which will allow a comparison with SWOT data

- the combination of height and water mask data from SWOT which is used to establish height-volume relationships, which are essential for mass balance of lakes.
- development of a data-assimilation software package using SURFEX and ISBA-CTRIP which can ingest SWOT pseudo-observations and discharge from rating curves in order to produce an analysis of water height and discharge at the global scale (with the eventual objective of ingesting actual SWOT data or SWOT-derived products).

- scientific publications in high impact journals
