The international and multi-disciplinary project HyMeX (2012-2022) will comprise an important observation campaign in the Mediterranean region. The overarching theme of HyMeX   is too fully understand and close the water cycle in the Mediterranean region at various space an time scales. Another attempt of this campaign is to observe atmospheric, oceanic and hydrological intense or extreme phenomena/events. Adaptive observation should be an important component of the atmospheric segment of the campaign in order to adequately observe HPE   and winter storms at various scales. New observing platforms such as pressurized balloons drifting in the boundary layer should be deployed during some special observation periods (SOP  ) with the support of targeting guidance issued by numerical tools tuned for both synoptic and meso-scales.
