Summary

HIGH-TUNE

HIGH resolution simulations to improve and TUNE the boundary-layer cloud parameterizations

Coordination : Fleur Couvreux

Date : 1 Decembre 2016-1 Décembre 2019

Short summary :
The HIGH-TUNE project will use high-resolution simulations to improve and tune the boundary-layer cloud parametrizations of operational weather forecast and climate models focusing on the representation of boundary-layer dynamics and cloud radiative impacts. Those simulations will be extensively compared to single column simulation for 12 selected 1D cases that cover the main cloudy boundary-layer regimes. The first objective is to deliver references for the estimation of radiative effect of boundary-layer clouds. Another objective of the HIGH-TUNE project is to promote and experience a new strategy for process oriented tuning of climate models. To reach these objectives, the consortium gathers applied mathematicians, radiative transfer experts, climate and atmosphere modeling experts.

Keywords: boundary-layer clouds ; cloud radiative effect ; global weather forecast and climate models ; Large-Eddy simulations ; Monte-Carlo radiative code; Parameterizations- Single Column Models ; Tuning

Rendering of a 4D cloud field produced by the Meso-NH (Lafore et al 1998, Lac et al 2018) Large Eddy model. Each frame was rendered with htrdr (an image renderer in the visible or infrared part of the spectrum, for scenes composed of an atmospheric gas mixture, clouds and a ground. More info under https://www.meso-star.com/projects/high-tune/high-tune.html and Villefranque et al 2019) using 4096 samples per pixel component. The resulting images are then postprocessed with the htpp program. Refer to the video for a complete description of how it was produced.
