Debriefing of the ALATNET Seminar on Data Assimilation

"All good things have to come to anend ..."

Participations

At the beginning, the organizers were a little disappointed by the number of full students but at the end they are very satisfied by the active participation during lectures and PAT. The "little" number of students can be explained easily as the topic this year ("Data Assimilation") was more specialized than for High Resolution Modelling last year and many teachers at one time on their very specialized topic were also students during other lectures.

Contents

Students who attended the first ALATNET Seminar were better satisfied by lectures here; two weeks was judged too long but it was better than during the Seminar on High Resolution Modelling thanks to PAT (practical things during the 2nd week). The 3rd ALATNET Seminar will be one week long.

Link between theory and how to use it was better than last year : presentation of some cooking method, possibility to see the concrete realization of the theory presented, ... All this was one step to use the all potential.

Review of state of art was appreciated (missing last year).

A small majority would have prefer to have the "introdution of different topics" by Jean-François Geleyn and Jean Pailleux at the end.

Recommended bibliographical work should have been indicated to students before the Seminar.

Practical Advanced Tutorial (PAT)

Documentations about PAT (especially the parto not followed for each requirent !) was requested : this is difficult for some lectures on very new subjects that are not stabilized and without bibliography available. Summary or completed on-line presentations will be available on the website after the Seminar.

Some of the participants regret that it was not possible to follow everything. After vote, the majority was in favor of PAT split and intense than having everything homogeneous. But when preparing the schedule more attention should have been payed to which PAT were proposed simultaneously.

Something missing ?

More precise informations about data observations techniques (it was not the subject but ...) would have been appreciated

From not ALADIN participants

The Seminar was judged "not too ALADIN oriented".

Next year , next Seminar

A one week ALATNET seminar will be organized in Slovenia on Numerical Technic.Météo-France/CNRM/GMAP will be in charge of the Scientific Organization Committee (programme, lecture topics, etc...) whereas the Slovenian team in Ljubljana will be Local Organization Committee (registration, practical questions etc...).

This Seminar will be followed by the 12th ALADIN Workshop hold in Croatia.

An official announcement with detailed programme will be sent within the SRNWP community and ALADIN Directors will also be asked to commit about the number of students they will send to the seminar.
