Official announcement of the ALATNET Seminar on Data Assimilation

On February 15, 2001, Jean-François GELEYN sent the following announcement to all Directors of ALADIN NMSs

Subject : Enquiry for the second ALATNET Seminar

Dear Sir,

In accordance with the request of many participating ALADIN Services, the second ALATNET Seminar (specialized in data assimilation issues) will replace the originally envisaged Newcomer Training Course.

This change means a lot of additional efforts from Météo-France, especially linked with the need to relocate outside Toulouse, in order to keep teachers and students as much as possible together like in Radostovice last year. We found the "Centre des Cordeliers" in Gourdon (Lot in France) at a reasonable price of 215 FF/day all inclusive and we are fully in the stage of preparing what I expect to be an interesting programme of lectures and exercises (more details about the preliminary programme and the local conditions can be found on http://www.cnrm.meteo.fr/alatnet/).

In order to guarantee the benefits for the project and the training network, I am now asking you to make every possible effort to send an important number of students to the Seminar. For keeping the costs as low down as above mentioned, it is important that we can rapidly certify the hosts about a rather accurate attendance figure.

I am therefore asking you a rapid commitment on the number of students (excluding the teaching role your Service may also play in this effort, in that case on ALATNET financing) you will send and, as for Radostovice, on the previous knowledge of NWP and ALADIN these will have previously acquired and on their future involvement in the project.

Awaiting for your prompt answer to this quite important question for the future collaboration in the ALADIN Project, Yours Sincerely,

Jean-François GELEYN

Head of CNRM/GMAP and Co-ordinator of ALATNET
